David Hume was the first modern philosopher to work out a rigorous and complete account of the foundations of knowledge. In his most famous work, A Treatise of Human Nature (1739), he says that in any case there are three basic requirements for knowledge: that it should be: 1. perception, 2. memory, and 3. belief. Hume thinks that in order to establish the third condition, a person must be able to make the transition from perceiving to believing that his perception is true. In other words, our beliefs should be formed by the same simple process of the mind that governs our perceptions. His point is that any belief that does not follow from perception must be accepted by a leap of faith: The third condition which, I think, is the foundation of all our knowledge, and without which it is impossible for us to acquire any thing, is a belief concerning the existence of any object, which does not arise from the perception or sensation of that object; but is altogether distinct from, and independent of any such perception or sensation. This last is that, which I call a REASON, or as I may also call it, a proof or evidence of the existence of any object, not perceiveable by the senses. It does not arise from any perception or sensation; it is in itself, as it were, an abstract, or intuitive judgment concerning the existence of an object. (Book I, Part III, Section VI) Note: This argument is sometimes called the sceptical argument. David Hume (1711–1776) In the History of England (1754–1762), Adam Smith (1723–1790) wrote: "In human nature, there is no disposition so much to be despised as that which leads men to trust entirely to their own understanding." It has also been said: "The more I learn, the more I know I don't know."
